How to Design a Dining Room?

From Ordinary to Iconic: A Coral Gables Dining Room Redesign

Looking back at one of our Coral Gables projects, that was featured on Houzz as one of the platform’s most saved projects, one design element consistently stood out in the comments: the striking green accent wall, tying the room together while drawing in the dense nature from the outdoors. Today, we’re sharing more about the design decisions behind this space.

The Power of Color

For the accent wall, we selected Sherwin-Williams SW 6179 Artichoke. This shade was chosen to reflect the homeowners’ passion for nature and to create an inviting atmosphere that reflected their admiration for the outdoor landscape. It’s a color that feels grounded yet refreshing—bringing the serenity of the outside in.

Space Planning & Furniture Selection

Another major transformation came through thoughtful space planning and curated furniture selection. The original window placement created challenges for a harmonious layout.

To resolve this, we introduced a timeless design trick: installing linen curtains across the entire wall. This technique balanced the architecture, visually enlarged the room, and encouraged the eye to flow naturally across the space.

Establishing a Focal Point

A very well-designed room needs a clear focal point. Without it, the senses can feel scattered. By reimagining the layout, we defined a central focus that gave the room direction and harmony. A strong focal point not only grounds a design but also makes the space more emotionally resonant, ensuring it feels intentional, comfortable, and inviting the moment you enter.

Playing with Scale

Finally, we reconsidered the scale of the elements. The new artwork was carefully selected and displayed in proportion to both the furniture and the room itself. Scale is a subtle but powerful tool; it helps create balance, sophistication, and a cohesive atmosphere that feels both refined and natural.

A Statement Lighting Piece

At the center of the dining room, a beautifully aged brass chandelier becomes both anchor and statement. Its warm metallic tones complement the green accent wall while introducing a touch of sophistication.

More than just a functional element, the chandelier creates a sense of intimacy, casting a soft glow that enhances the atmosphere and completes the room with contemporary elegance.
